How to Reduce Home Allergens
How to Reduce Home Allergens
March 6, 2020
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans on average spend 90% of their time indoors. This can lead to increased exposure to allergens and pollutants, some of which can be found in higher quantity indoors than outdoors! That is why the pros at American Air and Heat are here to share some tips on how you can reduce home allergens. By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure your indoor air quality is healthy and free of toxins.
1. Ventilate Your Home
If you have exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom, use them often. Having proper ventilation can prevent excess humidity from building up in your home, as well as other allergens such as dust mites, old spores and pet dander. In addition to using an exhaust fan, occasionally open your doors and windows to let fresh air in.
2. Prevent Pet Dander
Pets are fun to have but they can be a lot to manage. Plus, they bring in a lot of dander and dirt which can worsen your indoor air quality. Prevent pet dander by grooming and washing your pet often—how often you clean your pet depends on their breed and coat type. In addition to keeping your pet clean, make sure you wash their toys and furniture often. Pet dander can slowly accumulate on these items so it’s important you clean them frequently to prevent allergies.
Preventing pet dander by cleaning your pet as well as their toys and bedding can not only be good for you, but it will be good for your pet. Your furry friend will be healthier and happier when they are kept well-groomed.
3. Vacuum Often
The best way to prevent dust build up in your home is to dust and vacuum it often. Take an hour out once or twice a week to thoroughly vacuum and dust your home in order to reduce dust mites and dander. You can also follow it up with a mop for a more thorough cleaning.
4. Wash Your Bedding
Dust mites can accumulate in warm, humid environments such as your bedsheets. That’s why it’s important you reduce your exposure to dust mites by washing your bedding every two weeks in hot water.
5. Prevent Mold Growth
Mold spores can cause allergic reactions and even worsen asthma symptoms. To prevent mold growth, the most important thing you can do is reduce indoor humidity. You can always purchase a dehumidifier, but there are natural ways you can get rid of indoor humidity as well:
- Fix any leaks in your kitchen and bathroom
- If you have any plants, cover the soil with rocks and stones
- Increase ventilation
You can also take steps to reduce the moisture in your home such as:
- Wipe down your sink after you’re done using it. Standing water around your sink can worsen the sealant holding it together and lead to mold growth.
- Use a squeegee to wipe down your shower walls after taking a shower
- Take shorter showers
